The Art of Shipping: How We Package and Protect Fine Art for Transit

Falling in love with a piece of art is only the first step. Getting it safely from our studio to  your wall is where the real work begins.

At Roman Russo Studio, we believe the logistics are just as important as the image itself. We do not just create archival objects; we engineer them to survive the "final mile." Whether we are shipping an intimate piece to a private collector or a large statement work to a commercial design project, our packaging process is designed to eliminate risk.

Here is a behind-the-scenes look at how we package and protect your investment for transit.

1. The Philosophy of "Tailored Engineering"

Our packaging strategy is dictated entirely by the physics of the artwork's size. For example, a 20x24 inch frame requires a completely different structural approach than a 40x60 inch statement piece.

Before any piece is wrapped, we rely on our initial engineering choices to mitigate risk. This is why we exclusively use Museum-Grade Acrylic (instead of glass) for our large-scale works. Acrylic is virtually shatterproof, drastically reducing the weight of the piece and eliminating the risk of shards damaging the cotton rag paper during a turbulent freight journey.

2. Small & Medium Works: The Reinforced Shield

For our small and medium limited editions, the primary threats during transit are punctures and crushed corners. We combat this with a multi-layered defense system.

  • The Archival Layer: The framed artwork is first wrapped in acid-free glassine paper to protect the surface from dust and moisture without leaving any chemical residue.

  • The Cushioning: The piece is then secured in high-density foam or premium bubble wrap to absorb shock and vibration.

  • The Corner Protection: The most vulnerable points of any frame are the mitered corners. We apply heavy-duty, impact-resistant corner guards to ensure the joints remain perfectly square.

  • The Outer Shell: Finally, the artwork is encased in a custom-cut, double-walled corrugated box designed to resist punctures and bending.

3. Large-Scale Statement Pieces: Custom Crating

When artwork scales up to 40x60 inches or larger, standard cardboard packaging is no longer sufficient. These statement pieces require structural integrity that can withstand international freight handling.

  • Custom Wood Crates: Every large-format piece is shipped in a bespoke wooden crate, built specifically to the dimensions of the frame.

  • Internal Suspension: The artwork does not simply sit inside the wood; it is suspended. We use a combination of rigid foam planking and cross-bracing to lock the frame in place, creating an air buffer between the art and the exterior walls of the crate. This ensures that even if the outside of the crate takes an impact, the energy is dispersed before it reaches the frame.

  • Freight Handling: These crates are designed to be moved by pallet jacks and forklifts, keeping the artwork upright and stable throughout its journey.

4. Tracking and The Unboxing Experience

We know that waiting for a high-value acquisition can be stressful. Our studio team provides proactive communication, sharing detailed tracking information and coordinating delivery directly to your home, gallery, or project site.

When your artwork arrives, we want the unboxing process to be as refined as the art itself. Our packaging is designed to be unpacked logically and safely, ensuring your piece emerges in showroom condition, complete with its Certificate of Authenticity and pre-installed hanging hardware.
