Light Up the Dark
Year: 2022
City: Paris
Country: France
Orientation: Portrait
Most winters in Paris are riddled with stormy, rainy weather, and though foreboding clouds were ever-present, I was grateful to have a dry evening and quiet streets on my first trip to the city. While walking along the Place de la Concorde, where the historic axis of Paris opens between the Louvre and the modern city beyond, I was struck by the formidable ancient Egyptian obelisk and how it serves as a spatial hinge between ancient history and modern Paris.
As grey clouds passed overhead, above the oldest monument in Paris, I was fascinated by the juxtaposition of the Obelisk of Luxor and the Eiffel Tower behind it, with contemporary city lights below. Together, they act in unison as notable fixtures and pinnacle markers in Paris’s evolution. It felt to me like a concerted effort to light up the dark of the city.
